I Want to Breathe

Residents of Almaty often have to breathe air so polluted that it can be compared to smoking cigarettes — especially in winter. According to experts, over the course of a year, every resident inhales an amount of harmful substances equivalent to hundreds of smoked cigarettes. On the most polluted days, the body’s exposure can reach 5–6 cigarettes in just one day.
In our investigative report, together with our heroines — mothers who, like many women in Almaty, have to raise their children in polluted air — we explored the dangers of PM2.5 particles and which districts of Almaty suffer the most from air pollution.
