How Safe Is the Air in Almaty’s Kebab Houses

We studied the level of air pollution on the summer terraces of kebab restaurants and found that the familiar aroma of smoke and grilled meat is far from harmless. In some establishments, PM2.5 concentrations reached the “hazardous” level. Even with exhaust systems in place, weak filtration allows smoke and fine particles to remain in the cooking and dining areas, creating real health risks for both staff and visitors.
