FAQ (Questions and Answers)

Is the Almaty Air Initiative a government organization?

No, we are a private foundation. However, we work closely with government bodies—both local executive authorities and various ministries—to help improve the city’s environmental situation.

Why can’t we just clean the city’s air by installing lots of purifiers or other devices?

Air pollution in Almaty has two main drivers: temperature inversion and a high load of pollutants—industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and household waste burning. Even if there were a way to clean the air instantly, the frequent calm conditions and the current volume of traffic and industry would quickly make the air dirty again. A lasting effect is possible only by reducing overall emissions.

Where does the foundation get air-pollution data?

AAI uses open government data, international sources, as well as its own research and monitoring. The foundation applies modern visualization and analytics technologies.

Who funds the foundation’s activities?

The foundation is supported by sponsorship from individuals and organizations. In the future, we are considering applying for grants focused on the environment and air-pollution issues.

How can I support the foundation?

We do not collect individual donations. If you’d like to support us, practice awareness regarding air and ecology: tell your friends and family about our projects, track air cleanliness on our dashboard, use public transport instead of a private car, and avoid burning trash and tires.

I want to install your sensor at my place—what should I do?

We install sensors with the support of partners and sponsors, so there’s currently no need for additional points. However, you can purchase and install a sensor yourself, and we will display its data on our dashboard.

Someone is polluting the air near my home/work/school. What should I do?

Since we are not a government organization, we unfortunately cannot directly enforce environmental regulations in the city. You can submit a complaint about the offender (if known) or about the incident (if the source is unknown). Such a complaint can be filed via the E-otinish service or the OpenAlmaty portal. If you have photos or videos of the pollution, please send them to our Instagram Direct with a note of where and when they were taken—we will share the case in our Stories.
